DANUM VALLEY In the middle of a major timber concession owned by Sabah Foundation, the Danum Valley Field Research Center has long been known for work done on tropical forests. In a concession to the comforts of visitors, chalets have been built. Canopy walks, trails, and night walks can be organized to view wildlife in their natural habitat. Also, an opportunity to check out the nursery at the field center where indigenous species of trees are reintroduced into logged forest.

Itinerary
Day 1
Drive 83km from Lahad Datu airport to Danum Valley through selectively logged forest, cocoa and soft-wood plantations before arriving at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge beside Danum River on the edge of 438 sq. km of undisturbed lowland rainforest. The Lodge is home to the full range of Sabah’s lowland fauna, including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Elephants, Clouded Leopards, and Orang Utans. So far some 275 species of birds have been recorded in the area. Explore nature trail and nearby river. In the evening a slide show and if weather permits one can go spotlighting to view some of the nocturnal animals. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2
Morning Trek in search of mammals and birds. Trek to the Kadazandusun burial site ‘Coffin Cliff’ then proceed with trekking to the “View Point” for a bird’s eye view of the area. Descend to the “Jacuzzi Pool” for a refreshing dip. Water Tubing on the Danum Valley (optional activity). Night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Day 3
Morning at your leisure or enjoy a guided morning walk at Segama Trail/ Hornbill Trail. After lunch, depart for a 2 hour journey to Lahad Datu. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Recommended: Please bring along swim wear, binocular, towels, sun block lotion, personal toiletries, insect repellent, torchlight, hat, leech sock, walking shoes & raincoat.
